Run for the Cure

About the Project

This project was done in collaboration with LT Studio and installed outdoors on August 22nd, 2024 at The Bentway (250 Fort York Blvd) before being moved for CIBC’s Run for the Cure location on Sunday, October 6th.

A series of public sculptures were created for this event by different artists, and this piece called Flowers of Fortitude was created for the 5th Milestone. This particular milestone spoke to the advances in and prevention of breast cancer. Because of the Canadian Cancer Society & CIBC Run for the Cure, more is known about how to prevent breast cancer and diagnose it early.
Between the 1990s and early 2000s, the introduction of genetic testing, standardized screening, surgical measures, and drugs to prevent breast cancer helped decrease the likelihood of recurrence.

Additionally, a first-of-its-kind study published in 2019 established the greatest risk factors that lead to breast cancer diagnoses. The study found that 28% of breast cancer diagnoses may be preventable, with exercise being labeled as key to prevention.

Cassandra’s Inspiration

Flowers of Fortitude represents the growing successes that have contributed to survival rates. Improving since the 1980s, with advanced technological support alongside the expertise of medical professionals, the trajectory of survival rates is promising.

This work and its shape stand in as the body of knowledge that is just past its budding stage and about to embark on the next stage of growth.
Featuring primroses and daffodils, the blooms differ in size and colour, speaking to the individual journey as it stands among the collective while helping to hold it together. No bloom is lost among the cascade of flowers, each is custom coloured with a beautiful blend of pink hues. A reminder that each and every contribution matters.

This encourages those to interact with the work by walking around and discovering what is similar and what is different while being delighted and surprised by each unique one.
If this sculpture continues to grow, what would it look like? Which direction do you see it going?
